HOUSTON -- Rice University will build a new, state-of-the-art stadium for its nationally-ranked baseball team in time for the 2000 season, university officials announced Wednesday at a news conference in the Owl Club.

Rice's Board of Governors approved the plans during its meeting Wednesday morning, and athletic director Bobby May and head coach Wayne Graham unveiled the plans during the news conference.

"This stadium will help us sustain the program at the highest level," said Graham. "We've seen that more than 50 percent of the teams that make it to Omaha for the College World Series had hosted regionals, so this will help us stay at that level."

"The cost of this facilty will be about $6.4 million dollars, all of it coming from private sources," said May. "We are appreciative of all the support the baseball program has received over the past few years, and we know that this facility will enable us to sustain the momentum that has been created during the Wayne Graham era."

The stadium, to be built upon the site of the Owls' current home, Cameron Field, will seat 3,427 in the main grandstand area. Temporary bleachers will bring the total capacity to 5,667, enabling the Owls to host NCAA regional tournaments and other major events.

Jackson & Ryan Architects of Houston is the architect for the new building. Other features of the stadium will include locker rooms, training rooms, offices and work rooms for Rice baseball; locker rooms for visiting teams and umpires; a modern press box with six radio/television booths; a new scoreboard and messageboard; tournament and media work rooms; and concession and public rest room areas.

The new baseball stadium continues Rice's recent facilities upgrade. Other new athletics construction/renovations include the Fox Gymnasium, the new practice facility for basketball and volleyball adjacent to Autry Court; the John L. Cox Fitness Center; the locker room upgrades in Rice Stadium; and grass practice fields and a new AstroTurf surface in Rice Stadium.
